Rabbi Gersh LazarowMAJE, MAHL, Grad Dip Garron (or Gersh as he is now better known), emigrated to Australia from South Africa with his parents and three older brothers some 23 years ago. He attended local Jewish Day School after which he completed a Bachelor of Arts at Monash Univercity majoring in Jewish Civilisation and Archeology. During his university years, Gersh also served as Federal Director of Netzer Australia and as the Chairperson of the Zionist Youth Council of Victoria. After obtaining his Graduate Diploma in teaching, he commenced his Rabbinical studies at Hebrew Union College – Jewish Institute for Relgion in Los Angeles Calafornia. He successfully obtained his Masters of Hebrew Letters in 2006 followed by a Masters of Jewish Education the following year. He receive his Rabbinic Ordination in May 2009. Throughout the years of study Gersh has maintained a heavy workload. For a number of years, he served as the Youth & Program Director of the United Jewish Congreation in Hong Kong. In Melbourne he has worked as the Youth Director of the NEJWMC in Doncaster and as the Program Director of Temple Beth Israel in St Kilda. During his time in Los Angeles he had the privelage to serve the famed Wilshire Boulevard Temple both as Education then Resident Director at their Malibu Camps as most recently as the Rabbinic Intern and Religious School Principal for the Congregation itself. Gersh returned to Melbourne in May 2009 with his wife Michelle and there two children Livia and Samuel to begin his tenure as Rabbi of The King David School – Australia’s only Progressive Day School - where he directs the Department of Jewish Life and Learning and serves on the schools leadership team. Gersh is a passionate educator with a strong commitment to Progressive Jewish values, tradition and community. His enthusiasm and energy are infectious and he has talent for building and developing relationships. With extensive experience in education, community organizing, youth work, and organizational management, Gersh is a proven team player who has already made a remarkable difference to the King David School and looks forward to bringing his skill and passion to the BPS comminty.
